Staying fresh

AquaDSC_3873In Mexican restaurants we have Aguas Frescas. The combination of fruits, cereals, flowers, or seeds is blended with sugar and water to make a light non-alcoholic beverage and are popular in Mexico, Central America, the Caribbean, and the United States especially during hot weather.
Aquas Frescas are different from smoothies, as they are fresh, light and based on water, lime and lots of fruit. Another Agua fresca I was writing about is Chia Fresca, which contains besides lime also Chia seeds. Especially melon is refreshing other types are guava, mango and horchata (a rice milk.) Fall Fare

Fall salads need to be more creative. The season for good tomatoes and cucumbers is gone, as are light greens. Everything moves to more durable salad greens, root vegetables cabbages and exotic fruits. This week marks the last CSA and market day. Trying to extend my measly greens, I was surprised how well radishes and cabbage go with oranges and avocado. This is a very satisfying blend. See recipe.

Sunday mornings

I always loved waffles and pancakes! The yummy pictures in the Veg Starter Kit once convinced me that Veg life can be fun and tasty! So easy to follow, with ingredients that are at home without much planning. On Sunday mornings, maybe outside if weather allows, the waffles and pancakes are a great treat, especially after a long run. My pancake recipe is here…

Fennel shavings

The last days have been around freezing temperatures. After the unexpected snowstorm at the end of October, we lost power twice. Now nature seems back to its rhythm, trees still show colorful leaves, but temperatures have dropped. After warming up for dinner with a nice hot soup, a winter salad made with oranges and shaved aromatic fennel offers an interesting change. Continue reading

The turning leaves let crowds flock to the Rivertowns and upstate NY in the last weekends of October and early November. Eat your weeds

You don’t have to forage in public parks anymore for ‘Gourmet Weeds’. Even Union Square market sometimes sells wild edibles, such as Purslane (Portulaca oleracea) a persistent hot weather succulent in summer or the Common Chickweed (Stellaria media), which is one of the first persistent greens after frost.
